Personal Statement #1
I come from a migrant family that emigrated from Mexico to the central valley and works in the agricultural fields, often following the harvesting of the crops. My parents are hard working and sacrificing individuals who have always looked at out for their children's best interest. Their daily routine starts with my mom and dad waking up at the crack of dawn to get ready for work and usually ends in the late evening when they come home and start preparing dinner for that day. This is a never ending cycle of what I witness on a daily basis. Because I grew up with parents who worked in the fields to support us, I’ve seen first-hand how tirelessly they work to maintain a roof over my head. As I’ve grown up, I have been able to better understand my parents’ situation, and it’s made me realize that I want to do something more than work in the fields or work a minimum wage job. Instead I strive to continue my education and establish a career for myself and I know, college is the next stepping stone to expanding my horizon. I am surrounded by a family that is supportive and knows the importance of continuing one’s education beyond high school and go to college. I am fortunate to have parents who motivate me to go to college considering, due to financial hardship and lack of information, immigrant families from my local area typically don’t support their children's education. One memory that I always cherish is the time when my parents were in the living room hanging both of my sisters’ college diplomas side by side. They have left a space in between them, and I am confident that in four years, my own diploma will be displayed next to theirs. My parents belief and support to go to college and pursuing my dreams has influenced me in a positive way. It has motivated me to work diligently in high school and get straight A’s so that I am able to get into a great university. My family has made me be more dedicated, responsible, and more committed in my educational career than ever before. They’ve pushed me to the limit by helping me every step of the way in high school, attending all the meetings about my education and even asking me how school is on a regular basis. To be able to attend a university has been a goal of mine since I was very young and I’ve been influenced by not only my family but the community that I’m surrounded by. I can see myself in college getting a degree and making a change in our society. I want to be someone in life who will be remembered because of their hard work. I want to make my parents proud and demonstrate that I can accomplish my goals and attend a university with the drive of pursuing my dreams.
